Deadpool and Joker: Who is the craziest crazy person?

Here’s the thing about sanity, it’s boring. There’s something very expected about characters who operate completely within the boundaries of regular mental health. That’s why, as readers, we crave a little bit of crazy to spice things up! Enter Deadpool and Joker, two comic book characters who do crazy particularly well.  I think we can all agree both these guys are crazy, but the real question is which one is the most insane?

Just to be clear, this post isn’t about who would win in a fight (Deadpool would win that match-up hands down, sorry Joker).  Instead I’m looking to explore which one of these two fine gentlemen has slipped the farthest into the deep, black abyss that is madness.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines sanity as “the condition of having a healthy mind.”  Similarly, insanity is “a deranged state of mind usually occurring from a specific disorder.”

The Joker is high on the list when it comes to folks with ‘a deranged state of mind.’ He is an unstoppable force of evil with no real goals other than pushing the world towards complete chaos. Joker has killed hundreds of innocent people and tortured countless others.  He’s definitely not a nice guy. Still not convinced? Take a look at these examples:

The Joker has no concept of morality or rationality, therefore he is insane.

Much of the backstory behind the Joker is unknown. Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke explores a little bit of Joker’s history, but it’s unclear whether or not the events described by the Joker actually happened.  As he says himself, “If I have to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha Ha Ha!”

Because Joker has little to no backstory, it’s hard to say exactly what caused his mental irregularity.  On the other hand, it’s easy to pinpoint what drove Deadpool over the edge.

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, was an ex-military mercenary before volunteering for the Weapon X project.  All of Deadpool’s powers and abilities come from the experiments conducted on him at Weapon X.  Although the Weapon X testing did give Deadpool some cool regenerative abilities, it also destroyed his mental regularity.

Yup, Deadpool is crazy. It’s not uncommon for him to have vivid hallucinations, break the forth wall, and/or make 372,844 pancakes for no apparent reason. Even the voices inside his head have their own dialog boxes.  Here he is at his best:

Deadpool’s motivations are not nearly as evil as the Joker’s. The Merc with a Mouth is primarily interested in money, big explosions, and sexy ladies. But he’s still mentally irregular. Deadpool himself would probably admit that he is a few crayons short of a box. Although, you might end up with a ninja sword in your back if you asked him.

That’s why this contest is particularly difficult to judge, both Deadpool and Joker are crazy, but they each have their own special brand of crazy. Joker is the evil, criminally insane type of crazy person, whereas Deadpool has very little grasp on reality in general.

My first instinct was to go with Joker, just because he’s more extreme. If Deadpool could push a button and blow up a major city, I don’t think he would press it. Joker would press the button in a heartbeat.

But the more I thought about it, the more my opinion changed. Even if Joker did blow up a city, it would be a conscious decision that he was fully aware he was making. That just means that Joker is move evil than Deadpool, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s crazier.

Deadpool is loony, and there’s no other word to describe him. Due to his hallucinations, schizophrenic tendencies, and unexplainable urges, I’m giving the win to Deadpool. Let me know what you think in the poll and comments section below!

  1. Hmmm, difficult question. They’re different kinds of crazy, that’s for sure. Deadpool is more of a lovable comedic insane, while Joker is a darker more sadistic insane. Personally I have to give the win to Joker, Deadpool’s insanity is a little bit more predictable. Make no mistake he’s off the walls looney, but you kind of get used to his impulses. Joker is kind of a loose canon, and tends to keep you guessing.
